Harold C. Verhaaren is a shareholder and former director and officer at Nielsen & Senior, focuses his practice in the areas of business and commercial law, real estate law, construction law, and estate planning.
In private practice since 1965, Mr. Verhaaren has extensive experience in a wide variety of matters, including the negotiation, litigation, arbitration, and mediation of a wide variety of claims and disputes, both for plaintiffs and defendants. For more than twenty years, most of his work has involved real estate, business and construction issues, including complex, multi-million dollar disputes, and the negotiation of commercial leases with national and local tenants. He has acted as counsel for commercial real estate developers, lessors and lessees, and has represented owners, contractors, partners, directors, officers, managers, members, and shareholders of various business entities. His activities have included speaking to various groups on subjects related to his areas of expertise. He maintains a Martindale-Hubbell rating of “AV”, which is the highest rating awarded to attorneys for professional competence and ethics.
Mr. Verhaaren has been a member of the panel of Commercial Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association since 1987 and has been selected to arbitrate numerous construction, general commercial, and real estate disputes involving, among other things, breach of contract claims, lien disputes and enforcement, contract interpretation, design defects, change orders, and delay claims.
He is a member of the Salt Lake County Bar and the Utah State Bar Associations.
He received his juris doctor degree from the University of Utah in 1965 and served as a law clerk for Chief Justice J. Alan Crockett of the Utah Supreme Court. He was admitted to the bar in the State of Utah in 1965 and admitted to practice before the United States District Court, District of Utah in that same year; before the United States Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit in 1969; and before the United States Supreme Court in 1978.
Active in community service, Mr. Verhaaren has been a member and chairman of the Mount Olympus Planning District, a director of the Sugar House Rotary Club, and is a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award of the Boy Scouts of America. He is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Deta Theta Phi honor societies.
